Premier League Assist Record in One Season: Who Holds It?

Bruno Fernandes holds the Premier League single-season assist record with 21. Discover how he overtook Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Premier League assist record in one season is 21, set by Bruno Fernandes for Manchester United in 2025/26, at the time of writing. He broke the previous record of 20, shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, by setting up Patrick Dorgu against Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day. Henry had reached 20 for Arsenal in 2002/03, with De Bruyne matching him for Manchester City in 2019/20. So, if your instinctive answer is still Henry or De Bruyne, there is a new name to remember.

How Fernandes set the single-season assist record

Fernandes delivered the record-breaking corner for Dorgu’s 33rd-minute goal at Brighton on 24 May 2026. A week earlier, he had drawn level with Henry and De Bruyne by supplying Bryan Mbeumo against Nottingham Forest. That left United’s last league fixture as his opportunity to turn a shared record into an outright one. It was an appropriately dramatic finish: a season’s worth of creativity, movement and finishing ultimately separated from the previous benchmark by a single successful delivery. The Premier League’s official account confirms the total of 21.

What makes the achievement particularly striking is how long Fernandes waited to get started. His first assist did not arrive until 19 October, when he supplied Harry Maguire’s winner in United’s 2-1 victory at Liverpool. The subsequent haul included goals for Casemiro, Benjamin Sesko, Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha, among others: this was not simply one productive partnership carrying the tally. His final assist also brought him to 11 from set-piece situations, matching Steven Gerrard’s 2013/14 record. Corners might lack the glamour of a defence-splitting through-ball, but their value is right there in the numbers.

Henry, De Bruyne and the seasons that set the standard

Henry’s 2002/03 campaign remains extraordinary even without the outright assist record. He combined 20 assists with 24 goals for Arsenal, giving him 44 direct goal involvements. That is the important context: he was both finishing attacks and supplying the final ball for others. His assist total included three in Arsenal’s 4-0 victory at Sunderland in May 2003, plus two assists in four other matches. For anyone who remembers Henry primarily as a goalscorer, this season offers a useful correction. The player opponents feared receiving the chance was just as capable of creating it.

De Bruyne equalled Henry’s mark 17 years later, producing 20 assists in 35 league appearances in 2019/20, compared with Henry’s 37 appearances in 2002/03. He also scored 13 goals, and finished comfortably ahead of the next-best provider that season, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold on 13 assists. Yet Manchester City ended the campaign 18 points behind champions Liverpool. That distinction matters: the greatest individual creative season does not necessarily belong to the title-winning side. De Bruyne’s achievement was also part of a sustained pattern, following his 18-assist campaign in 2016/17 rather than appearing from nowhere.

Below the record holders, Mesut Ozil’s 19 assists for Arsenal in 2015/16 stand out as a memorable near-miss. He collected 16 in his first 18 appearances, then added only three across his final 17. It is a useful warning against projecting an early-season pace straight through to May. The group on 18 includes Frank Lampard for Chelsea in 2004/05, Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea in 2014/15, De Bruyne for City in 2016/17 and Mohamed Salah for Liverpool in 2024/25. Fabregas also registered 17 for Arsenal in 2007/08. Even among these exceptional creators, reaching 20 proved elusive.

What the Premier League assist record actually measures

This is a record for assists in Premier League matches during a single season, not a player’s total across domestic cups and European competition. It is also separate from the career assists leaderboard: one measures a concentrated burst of production, the other sustained output over many campaigns. In simple terms, an assist credits the final supply before a goal. It does not capture every important contribution to an attack. The pass that opens up the pitch may be brilliant, but if somebody else delivers the final ball, the earlier creator does not receive that assist.

Nor are assists interchangeable with chances created. Fernandes created 136 Premier League chances during his record-breaking campaign, but his assist total was 21. That gap illustrates why the record depends on more than the provider alone: teammates still have to finish. A beautifully weighted pass can yield nothing on the statistics sheet if the shot misses, while a straightforward delivery can become an assist through an outstanding finish. The total is therefore a compelling measure of successful creation, rather than a complete verdict on passing quality. It rewards the connection between supplier and scorer.

Finally, the record should not be confused with the Playmaker of the Season award, which recognises the leading assist provider in an individual campaign. The award was first presented in 2018, with De Bruyne its inaugural winner; earlier assist totals still count in the historical record. Winning the seasonal award does not require breaking the all-time benchmark, either. For the quickest way to remember the summit, keep the sequence simple: Henry established 20, De Bruyne matched 20, and Fernandes moved the mark to 21. That is the number any future challenger must surpass.
